There are a lot of ants in Colorado. Millions of them, in fact! Perhaps you've seen one. Of course you have. They're everywhere. But, usually, they aren't in our homes or businesses. This is because we work to keep them out. Let's take a quick look at the kinds of ants that do manage to get past our defenses here in Colorado, and see what we do to fix that problem.

Sugar Ants

This is a term used to describe many species of ants that can be found eating sugar, but it is also the specific name for the species of ant known as Camponotus consobrinus. These ants have brownish-orange bodies and a distinct black head and hind section and can be as small as 2mm or as large as 15mm (that is ½ an inch).

While sugar ants can bite humans, it doesn't hurt like a fire ant bite; so these ants are classified as a nuisance pest. They can, however, spread harmful bacteria from trash cans to food prep surfaces or food storage areas which can cause sickness to develop.

Pavement Ants

This is another ant that has a name that does a good job of describing them. Pavement ants like to live in the cracks of pavement, but they can also be found under concrete slabs and in basement walls, which can cause them to find their way inside your home. These are very small black ants that will usually be 2.5 to 4mm in length. These little ants are nuisance pests with no real harmful traits.

Carpenter Ants

Of the three ant species that will get into your Colorado home or business, these are the ants you do not want to get. And, unlike the other two ants on our list, carpenter ants do not have a name that adequately describes them. These ants aren't going to fix anything in your home. They are a destructive species that chew tunnels and galleries inside wood to make their nests which can lead to structural issues.

If you have carpenter ants coming in, it is important to identify them. This ant species is jet black with some reddish tint and will be 6 to 12 mm in length.
