Are Termites In Colorado Active All Year?

Getting started is easy.

You would think that, with all of the snow we get here in Colorado, and with temperatures that drop down below 0 °F most winter nights, that termites would not be a problem for us in the winter, but that is not the case. Under the right conditions, termites in Colorado can be active all year long. But what are these "right" conditions, you ask? Here's what you need to know.

Hibernation Plays A Role

Termites do not hibernate. That is the first reason, they are able to be a problem all year long. While termites may go into a low energy state that looks a lot like hibernation, it is different in one very important way; if it is warm enough, they don't slow down at all. And, even if it is cold enough for them to slow down, they will start back up as soon as temperatures warm.

Termites Don't Sleep

Termites do not hibernate. That is the first reason, they are able to be a problem all year long. While termites may go into a low energy state that looks a lot like hibernation, it is different in one very important way; if it is warm enough, they don't slow down at all. And, even if it is cold enough for them to slow down, they will start back up as soon as temperatures warm.

The Wrong Conditions

Most of the time, termites will attack a home from a distance. Worker termites can travel the length of a football field to acquire food. A single termite nest can feed on more than one home at a time. If your home is being damaged by a remote nest, the cold weather is likely to stop them. As it gets cold, termites will slow down, and may even retreat to their nests, down below the frost line, sometimes as much as 40 inches below the surface.

The Right Conditions

In order for termites to feed on your home during the cold winter months, they need to establish themselves under your home or have tunnels that come up from under your home. It is also necessary for their mud tubes to be in a location that is warm enough for termite workers to make it up to the wood of your home without freezing. If they do, they will munch on your equity all winter long without blinking an eye.

Silent Destroyers

Termites work quietly inside the wood they are feeding on. If you have the right conditions for termites to feed on your house in the winter, they will do it without you knowing. That is why the termite experts here at EnviroPest use a control solution that works 365 days a year. It is called the Trelona® ATBS Annual Bait Station. It targets termites and not only arrests termite damage but actively works to destroy the colony that is sending the termites. It does this all winter long, even while you're sleeping--and even between pest control visits.

Termite Control With Trelona®

Trelona® is an eco-friendly solution that uses a bait that is scientifically proven to be more interesting to termites than wood, their primary food source. When they take the bait back to their nest, it works its way to the queen. And when the queen dies, the colony dies.
