What do mosquitoes look like?

Here in Colorado, there are two groups of mosquitoes to be aware of and they are the genus Aedes and the genus Culex. While all mosquitoes look similar to our eye anyway, it's worth noting the behavior of these two species in Colorado. You see, the genus Aedes are often referred to as floodwater mosquitoes because they are found near standing water including ponds, marshes, and depressions caused by rain or snow melt. They are the mosquitoes that are likely to bite during the day.

Culex mosquitoes, on the other hand, typically only come out in during dawn and dusk hours; they avoid the hot sun and temperatures. 

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

Yes, mosquitoes can be dangerous to humans, particularly the genus Culex. This species is the main vector for West Nile virus, Western equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis.  

While the Zika virus is not present in Colorado, residents should be aware of the risks for contracting the illness in other states or countries where they plan to travel. Why do I have a mosquito problem?

There is a lot of information out there on what attracts mosquitoes. On list is wearing dark clothing, having high cholesterol and even being pregnant. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to avoid run ins with these biting insects. When it comes to mosquito bites, you only have to worry about female mosquitoes. Both males and females feed on the sugars of plants, nectar, and honeydew. Females also need a blood meal to reproduce. Males don’t even have the ability to bite.

If you're property seems to have a lot of mosquito activity, take a look around. Do you see areas of standing water? Tall grass? To breed, female mosquitoes also need standing water. And not a lot of it. Water collected in a trash can cover provides suitable conditions for her reproduction efforts. Consider how many spots around your home or business would make perfect breeding sites. Bird baths, wading pools, old tires, the wheelbarrow, the list goes on and on.

Next, look for potential places that mosquitoes might seek relief from the hot sun. Tall grasses and overgrown vegetation are ideal hiding spots for these pests.

How can I prevent mosquitoes?

Mosquito prevention can be difficult especially since these pests can travel up to 14 miles per day looking for food. Below we’ve shared a few tips that may help you discourage mosquito activity.

• Keep your lawn trimmed short and cut back on the amount of overgrowth on your property.
• Eliminate standing water including clogged gutters and stagnant ditches.
• Remove items that collect water on your property. This includes old tires, buckets, flower pots, tarps, etc.
• Cover swimming pools, refresh bird baths and turn children’s wading pools over when not in use.
