Why Are There So Many Spiders This Summer?
This summer, there have been more spiders than usual in Colorado. If you're curious as to why, you've come to the right place. Today, we'll look at four reasons that you're seeing more spiders. We'll also connect the dots and tell you what you can do to keep spiders out of your home. We are a pest control company, after all, so it only makes sense. The Colorado weather has been wet
Tropical storms and hurricanes in Central America often push moisture our way. We've had a few high moisture systems come our way this year, bringing lots of rain. Water is a building block of life, and all animals need it. Some animals require moisture for breeding, and a rainstorm can lead to a boom in population growth. Mosquitoes are a good example. Carpenter ants are another pest that loves moisture, or rather, loves how it softens or damages wood. What does all of this have to do with spiders? Mosquitoes, ants, and other insects are food for spiders.
Heat is a catalyst for pest activity
Many pests, including spiders, are more active when it is warm (or even hot). High temperatures impact spiders in two ways: First, spiders are busy when it is warm; they hunt for food more, breed more (later in the summer), and hatch more. Second, the insects spiders eat are busy doing these things, which results in more food opportunities for spiders.
Summer heat can drive spiders indoors
All of this heat we've been getting has another impact on spiders. It can dry them out. Sustained heat drives spiders to seek shaded environments. When spiders find entry points in man-made structures, they can slip inside. If you're seeing more spiders, you may need to consider pest-proofing or hiring a pest control service provider to apply a pest control barrier around your exterior.
Spiders are always more noticeable in summer
Colorado residents typically see more spiders during the summer, even when conditions aren't ideal. Spiders are more plentiful in summer and become even more observable in late summer when searching for mates. Increased breeding and activity make spiders a bit more noticeable- and a bit more annoying.
Spider prevention tips for Front Range and NoCo Residents
Can you do anything about spiders? Absolutely. Let's build on what we've discussed in this post.
- Clean out gutters to reduce the amount of water that dampens the soil next to structures. Doing so will help the soil dry faster.
- Trim your landscaping, remove weeds, trim tree canopy, and cut grass. Yard work thins out vegetation and lets the sun in to dry things out after it rains.
- Apply gradation or add fill to address puddles in your yard.
- Use expanding foam to seal gaps around plumbing and wiring that enter your home.
- Replace worn-out weatherstripping or door sweeps.
- Patch screen holes and ensure your screens fit tightly around your windows and doors.
- Use a caulking gun to seal gaps around window and door frames.
- If your home has weep holes, make sure you have weep hole protectors.
- Clean out your trash receptacles and cover them to reduce smells that attract insects and the spiders that eat them.
- Clean up any organic debris near your home and in your yard.
- Remove leaf litter to reduce damp habitats and stunt pest population growth.
- Remove clutter near your home. Spiders hide in clutter and establish webs to catch food in concealed locations.
- Remove all logs, branches, and wood piles.
Focusing on yard clean-up and home maintenance can significantly deter spiders. But you're never alone in your efforts to keep pests out.
